An effective trainer/ mentor is not only a transmitter of knowledge but also a facilitator of relationships and emotions within the learning environment. The ideal characteristics of a trainer/ mentor, whether innate or developed through practice, play a key role in promoting successful, inclusive and engaging learning experiences, particularly in adult education. These characteristics help foster trust, motivation, and openness among learners, contributing to an environment where everyone feels safe and valued.

Desirable characteristics of a trainer/ mentor include:

Tip:

  • Create moments of personal connection (e.g., greeting each learner by name, asking how they are)
  • Show vulnerability when appropriate (e.g., admitting when you don’t know something, this builds trust)
  • Use reflective listening techniques to show learners they are being heard
  • Be open to learner feedback and adapt sessions based on it
  • Acknowledge learners’ contributions and knowledge by position yourself as a co-learner
  • Take regular moments to check in emotionally, not just cognitively – especially in longer sessions
  • Be mindful of your tone, body language and pacing, they communicate as much as your words
