Mentoring mindset and skills: intergenerational communication techniques, “how to be a good mentor”, mentee-mentor relationship

Communication styles of different generations – аdapting the approach

How to speak the ‘same language’ with the senior mentee?

KEY MESSAGE

Specifics of ways how different generations process information and how to adapt our approach to their style of learning and doing things.

Each generation has unique habits and preferences when it comes to communication and learning. While younger people are used to fast digital interaction, older mentees may prefer a slower pace, face-to-face conversations, or written instructions. Understanding how they process information is key to successful mentoring. Avoid jargon or overly technical language. Use simple, structured explanations and visual aids, when needed. Also, be ready to repeat information and to provide step-by-step guidance. Adapting your tone and communication style—more formal or informal—based on their preference builds rapport and improves learning outcomes. Effective mentors observe, listen, and adjust their approach accordingly.

Practical
Tip:

When explaining how to use a smartphone app, show each step slowly on your own device, then let the mentee try it. Be patient.
