Mentoring mindset and skills: intergenerational communication techniques, “how to be a good mentor”, mentee-mentor relationship

Mentor’s role for building positive motivation for learning

What is it to be a mentor to a senior person?

KEY MESSAGE

Mentor’s role for building mentee’s confidence, setting achievable goals and a suitable learning mood, especially when it comes to the ICT environment.

Being a mentor to a senior person requires emotional intelligence, patience, and the ability to inspire. A young mentor is not just a knowledge provider, but also a motivator and guide who builds a secure and respectful learning space. When mentoring older generations, especially in digital environments, confidence building becomes key. Seniors may feel insecure when learning new technologies, so the young mentor must encourage and empower them with achievable goals, consistent support, and positive reinforcement. The mentor’s role also includes adapting the learning pace, giving clear feedback, and fostering resilience. By offering structured motivation and personalized support, the mentor becomes a catalyst for growth and self-confidence in the mentee.

Practical
Tip:

When teaching an older mentee to use social media, start with small, clear steps. Celebrate progress often and encourage questions. Share how this new skill can help them stay connected with family or friends, or share their life stories, boosting their motivation and confidence.
