What is intergenerational mentoring: mentoring in general, reverse mentoring

Building Trust and Communication in Mentoring

How Do You Build Trust in Mentoring?

KEY MESSAGE

Trust and clear communication are essential to make learning effective, especially between different generations.

Trust helps mentees to ask questions without fear – especially when it comes to digital topics, for example, which can be confusing.Young mentors should create a respectful atmosphere by listening actively, explaining clearly, and acknowledging progress. Older mentees benefit from repetition, real-life examples, and encouragement.

Regular feedback builds confidence and keeps learning on track. Humor and storytelling can break the ice and deepen connection. Mentoring thrives on communication that is empathetic, slow-paced, and supportive. Small rituals like opening each session with a ‘how was your week?’ build continuity and comfort.

Practical
Tip:

Start each session by checking in personally. Ask how the mentee is feeling about the last lesson and celebrate even small progress.
