What is intergenerational mentoring: mentoring in general, reverse mentoring

What is Intergenerational Mentoring?

How Can Different Generations Learn from Each Other?

KEY MESSAGE

Intergenerational mentoring fosters knowledge exchange between generations, strengthening bonds and enabling mutual learning.

Intergenerational mentoring is a dynamic relationship where individuals from different age groups exchange knowledge and experiences. In our project, the younger person acts as the mentor and supports an older adult in building digital skills and navigating technology.

This includes using smartphones, tablets, social media, and other online services. Older mentees, in turn, bring wisdom, patience, and rich life stories that inspire and deepen the connection. The relationship goes beyond technical training—it fosters personal growth, curiosity, and emotional connection for both sides.

Young mentors improve their communication, teaching abilities, and empathy, while older mentees gain confidence and autonomy in the digital world. This type of mentoring reduces digital exclusion, challenges age-related stereotypes, and promotes mutual respect and lifelong learning across generations.

Practical
Tip:

A teenager teaches an older adult e.g. how to send photos via different social media tools. In return, the older person shares stories from their youth. This exchange creates trust, strengthens their bond, and helps both generations learn from each other.
