Andragogy and Cognitive theory

KEY MESSAGE

What Andragogy and Cognitive theory are and what they are used for.

Andragogy is an education in adult education and is based on motivation and self-knowledge, besides considering the learner’s experience as a fundamental element. It works with practical contents and applies to everyday situations (achieving useful immediate results is a motivating factor for learners).

Senior adult learners try to guide their learning by focusing on tasks and solving concrete problems. For the adult/senior learner, there has to be a reason for learning, and the importance has to be clear in terms of relevance and relevance to help solve their problems.

Therefore, the recommendation is that adult education/training actions start with activities that promote self-directed learning.

As a model for adult education, andragogy is characterized by a methodology that promotes learners’ active participation—through flexibility (also in the organization of the curriculum) and focusing on the process, instead of the emphasis on content, aiming to meet each adult’s specificities.

Practical
Tip:

The mentor must ensure that the training environment has:

  1. practices of mutual respect
  2. cooperative activities (the senior is not left alone)
  3. support and help throughout the process and whenever requested
  4. openness to any questions or doubts
  5. activities that generate pleasure
  6. a comfortable environment (physical and social climate)
  7. informality in the process
  8. positive reinforcement of everyone’s achievements
