Mentoring mindset and skills: intergenerational communication techniques, “how to be a good mentor”, mentee-mentor relationship

Overcoming hierarchy barriers between generations

How can the young mentor build authority and partnership with a senior mentee?

KEY MESSAGE

Psychological challenges related to the young mentor’s authority and strategies for building effective relationships with a senior mentee.

One of the key challenges in intergenerational mentoring is the perceived hierarchy based on age. Young mentors may feel insecure or be seen as less credible by elderly mentees. The key is to shift the focus from age to collaboration. Respect must be mutual. Young mentors can gain authority by being well-prepared, consistent, and supportive rather than authoritative. Avoid acting like a “teacher”—act as a partner. Encourage two-way learning, where both sides share knowledge and experience. Showing humanity and professionalism helps to establish a balanced relationship. Over time, the mentor gains influence by showing dedication, respect, and reliability.

Practical
Tip:

Say: “I’d love to learn from your experience too.” This sets a tone of mutual respect and breaks the age barriers.
