Understanding the importance of empathy and its role in the communication and learning process. Building strategies for active listening and emotional rapport with the senior mentee.
Empathy is one of the most important skills for any mentor, especially in intergenerational settings. Seniors may bring their own fears, expectations, and learning styles. As a young mentor, showing empathy means trying to see the world through their eyes. Listen carefully, observe for non-verbal cues, and reflect their concerns without judgment. Active listening includes not only hearing the words, but understanding the feelings behind them. When mentors respond with empathy, they build emotional safety and trust. This makes learning smoother and more enjoyable. Emotional rapport helps reduce anxiety and supports the mentee in becoming more engaged and confident.
If your elderly mentee seems frustrated, pause and ask how they feel. Repeat their words back to show understanding: “So you’re saying that it’s confusing?”
